Why IELTS Writing Matters

In today’s global economy, English proficiency is more than a skill — it is a gateway to opportunity. The IELTS exam is widely recognised as a standard for academic and professional communication. It measures not only vocabulary and grammar, but also the ability to organise ideas clearly, think critically, and express complex thoughts effectively. These are exactly the skills required to succeed in international business, higher education, and cross-cultural collaboration.

And despite my distaste for the standardisation that runs rampant in a lot of academia these days, I have tremendous respect for the IELTS exam.  I believe every thinking person, native English speakers included, should prepare for it, take it and reflect deeply upon its value.  If I were running my own business, I would have all applicants take a practice version.  The job interview would be the Speaking section and I would give them an hour to complete writing.

Achieving a high IELTS score opens doors to universities, companies, and networks worldwide. It signals to employers and institutions that you can communicate confidently and coherently in English, even in demanding or high-stakes environments. This capability is increasingly crucial for professionals in Japan who wish to compete on a global stage.

Even for corporate executives who will never take the test, IELTS offers a powerful framework for professional English mastery. Its focus on fluency, coherence, and structured expression provides a roadmap for communicating clearly in meetings, presentations, emails, and negotiations. By using the IELTS approach as a guide, executives can strengthen their English proficiency strategically, ensuring that their ideas land as intended and influence is maximised in global contexts.

For over a decade, I have guided learners in Japan to achieve these goals. Through tailored instruction, focused practice, and strategic coaching, I have helped countless students and professionals master the skills needed to reach high band scores and succeed in real-world English contexts. My experience combines deep knowledge of the IELTS framework with an understanding of the specific challenges faced by Japanese learners, ensuring that preparation translates directly into performance.
